Is the Pilot Shortage Real and How Will it Affect Consumers

April 24th, 2013

Aruba Pilot ShortageAruba – There is a fear that America may soon be facing a pilot shortage, due to both new regulations and impending retirements. How will that shortage affect travelers looking to book their dream Aruba golf vacationing Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes and a travel expert, explains more about the shortage below.

The first issue currently facing airlines is the mandatory retirement of many pilots. In the United States, there is a mandatory retirement age of 65 for all commercial pilots. The next several months see many commercial pilots reaching that age, which means there needs to be a new crop of pilots to replace them.

However, after a regional airline plane crashed in 2009, new legislation was enacted that required more hours of training before pilots can fly for commercial airlines. That legislation goes into effect this summer. The new regulation requires 1500 hours of flight before a pilot can apply to fly commercially. That is nearly six times the previous requirement, which leaves many experts fearful that it will leave many well-qualified pilots unable to apply for positions with the larger airlines. The smaller, regional airports will be the first to feel the shortage because that is where most pilots begin their commercial training.

Other issues facing the airline industry include new pilot fatigue rules, which require pilots to have more rest time in between flights. Previously, pilots only required two hours of rest time in between flights, but the new time has increased to a mandatory 10 hours. This, and other pilot fatigue rules, will make fewer pilots available for the steady stream of flights that leave airports each day.

Another issue United States airlines face is competition from overseas airlines that often pay more, meaning U.S. pilots leave for increased pay. That means American companies will need to begin increasing pay to keep these pilots in America. That cost will trickle down to consumers, who might see slight increases in airline tickets. That means families budgeting for those beachfront rentals now have another added expense to consider.

Regional airlines will be the first to feel the pilot shortage. These smaller airlines are where commercial pilots typically begin their careers, and as these larger airlines are in need of new pilots, they will begin to attract more and more regional pilots. That could force these smaller airlines to cancel some, and in many cases maybe even all, of their flights.

But just because the bigger airlines may be able to attract those new pilots doesn’t mean they are in the clear. The thousands of retiring pilots are leaving a void that will be difficult to fill, even with the smaller airline pilots moving up. The demand for pilots has increased, but the pool of available and acceptable candidates has decreased, due to stricter training regulations and the expense of training with no guarantee of being hired once training is completed.

So what is the good news for consumers?

According to Smillie who offers vacation villas in Aruba, there is debate as to whether the pilot shortage is real, or simply a scare tactic by the industry to fight back against the new, stricter regulations. While the reality of thousands of pilots reaching retirement age is very real, some related to the field believe the industry may be causing panic to push back against Congress for enacting the new guidelines.

“While the pilot shortage may well be a cause for concern for regional and even some commercial airlines, consumers may not feel the effects for quite some time,” says Smillie, an Aruba rentals and vacation expert. “While the cost of an airline ticket may increase slightly to accommodate increases in pay, most travelers won’t even realize it. Those most affected will probably be budget savvy consumers and families traveling together. We are still encouraging our clients to book those rental properties as normal.”

For now, consumers are encouraged to keep a close eye on the industry to see what transpires. While there is a need for new pilots, only time will tell whether the impending crisis is real, or simply a scare tactic being used by the industry to fight tougher regulations.

Staying Healthy While Traveling Abroad

March 30th, 2013

Travel to Aruba BeachAruba – Traveling to a Caribbean paradise is a dream come true. But what happens if travelers become ill on their trip and that dream quickly becomes a nightmare? Before traveling, especially out of the country, there are some important things to remember.

“We have good medical care in Aruba,” says Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, a company that rents luxury and beach accommodations in Aruba. “We have one hospital and a smaller medical center that is located on San Nicholas. But we do advise visitors to be sure they are healthy before any kind of travel, especially some place far from home.”

The most important thing to do when traveling abroad is to check to make sure your health insurance will cover you wherever you are traveling. Ask your insurance company not only if it follows you outside of the U.S., but also if it covers emergencies, such as a trip to a foreign hospital or an emergency evacuation. If your policy does not include overseas coverage, consider purchasing additional coverage before going on your trip.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a few recommendations before visitors set foot in their villas in Aruba. It’s important to visit your physician four to six weeks before travel. At that time, the doctor can provide any vaccinations you may need before travel. The CDC encourages travelers to see a physician who specializes in travel medicine, because he or she will be more familiar with what conditions may face you in your travel.

Before traveling, always be sure your vaccinations are up to date. Let your physician know if you will be traveling to more than one country during your travel. This is important because you may be required to have different vaccinations in each country. For instance, while yellow fever is currently not a disease risk in Aruba, the government does require travelers coming from certain countries that have a risk of the virus transmission to present proof of vaccination. If you travel into Aruba from a country other than the U.S., this could affect you.

“Although we do have good medical care and pharmacies that can fill prescriptions, it’s important to bring any medicine you regularly take with you,” says Smillie, who prides himself on helping visitors to Aruba find their perfect beach villa. “Our pharmacies may not have the exact medications you have available in the U.S., so to prevent an emergency, always bring the medicines you take every day.”

Be sure you bring a supply of your prescriptions to last for your entire trip. It’s a good idea to pack a little extra, in the event of an emergency. To avoid confusion, it’s best to keep them in their original prescription bottles and keep them in your carry-on luggage. That way, even if your luggage is lost, you will never be without the medication you need. If your medications are liquids, be sure to read and follow all guidelines as set forth by the Transportation Security Administration. Also, please remember that some prescriptions available in the U.S. are actually illegal in other countries. If your medication is deemed illegal in another country, your physician can write you a letter detailing why the medicine has been prescribed.

When packing, it’s important to remember a few essentials, in addition to your bathing suits and sunglasses. Purchase iodine tablets or portable water filters to purify water if needed. Pack plenty of sunblock to prevent damage from dangerous UV rays. Pack plenty of antibacterial hand wipes or hand sanitizer. Also pack long-sleeved shirts made from a lightweight material and long pants to wear outside to avoid mosquito and other insect bites.

Once you’re safely in the country and enjoying your rental villa, there are a few things to remember. The leading cause of illness in travelers is diseases from food and drink. Travelers should always thoroughly wash their hands with soap and water, especially before eating. Travelers are encouraged to drink only bottled or boiled water or drinks in cans or bottles. Avoid eating food from food vendors and always be sure food is fully cooked. Also, be sure any dairy products have been pasteurized.

If you happen to become ill while in Aruba, healthcare on the island is considered to be on par with that of a smaller U.S. city. Dr. Horacio Oduber Hospital is a 280 bed facility with modern equipment and is walking distance from the hotel district. It has established ties to U.S. and Dutch hospitals for specialized treatment and care.

In the case of an emergency, many of the hotels will have a consulting physician available. The Emergency Department also has physicians on site 24 hours a day and specialists are on call.

The medical center offers services in internal medicine, obstetrics, urology, orthopedics and much more. The physicians are licensed and certified in the U.S. or Holland, while a few are from South American.

In the case of a dental emergency, there are also excellent dental services available on the island.

Traveling abroad, no matter where the destination, takes some planning and preparation on the part of the traveler to ensure good health during their visit. But when visiting a country like Aruba, visitors can rest easy knowing that should an emergency occur, there are well-trained and compassionate physicians available to help.

The Benefits of Booking a Vacation Package

February 26th, 2013

Aruba vacation and rental packages

Aruba – Travelers often research for extended periods of time before booking travel. But working with the experts at a vacation rental company can ensure all details of a vacation are well thought out before vacationers leave the comfort of their homes.

“Planning your perfect vacation doesn’t have to be stressful,” says Michael Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, a beach rental company. “Our company can help vacationers not only find their perfect place to stay during their vacations in Aruba, but we can also help plan all of the details of the trip.”

Traveling to someplace you’ve never been, especially if it’s out of the country, can lead to anxiety about making sure you’ve remembered all the details. How will you get to and from the airport? How will you rent a car during your stay? Who can help you book spa treatments, tours or other excursions during your trip?

All these can be solved by working with a local company like Aruba Villa Vacation Homes. Not only does the company offer luxury vacation rentals in Aruba, but they offer tailor-made packages to make your vacation perfect.

When planning your travel, map out your vision for the vacation. Once you have an idea of the places you’d like to visit and where you’d like to stay, a vacation rental company will be able to help you make those dreams a reality.

Working with a travel or rental company can take the guessing out of travel for you, and make you feel at ease before you jet off to paradise. No matter how big or small your requests, a reputable travel company will be able to accommodate you.

Arrange airport transportation with the travel company beforehand. They can arrange a taxi, car or limo to meet you and your family and deliver you directly to your accommodation. This can be especially helpful if you are planning an extended vacation or have several members in your party and have many pieces of luggage.

If you are planning a vacation somewhere that will require the use of a car to get around, your vacation experts can recommend preferred suppliers and book a car for you. The vacation company you use will most likely have contacts they use regularly and can arrange to have the car delivered directly to you at your rental home or have it waiting for you upon your arrival.

“Another advantage to using a company like ours is that we will meet you when you arrive at your vacation rental,” says Smillie, whose company offers beachfront villas in Aruba. “If you rent a vacation home or condo, it is helpful to have someone meet you to show you the ins and outs. The expert who meets you can explain local culture and help familiarize you with your rental home.”

Renting a vacation home can save travelers money because they have the advantage of having a kitchen and therefor won’t need to eat out every meal. But knowing where the grocery stores are and arranging transportation to them might be difficult. A travel company can assist travelers by having kitchens fully stocked when guests arrive.

Travel experts will also know what tours and activities are the best for visitors. In many cases, they will have established relationships with many suppliers, which can lead to discounts for travelers. But most importantly, the experts can recommend can’t-miss activities that will make your vacation world class. They can even arrange spa appointments and schedule rounds of golf to make your vacation complete.

Perhaps the greatest advantage to using the knowledge of a travel expert is the peace of mind it can bring you. Booking accommodations, arranging airport travel and scheduling excursions and activities take the guessing out of the traveling game. And renting a vacation home will allow you the comforts of home, even when traveling outside of the country.

Registering Contact and Itinerary Information in Case of an Emergency

January 28th, 2013

Aruba – When traveling, whether at home or abroad, there are so many things to consider. Did I pack appropriate clothing for any weather I may encounter? Did I remember my cellphone charger and medications? Did I turn off my appliances at home before leaving? These are a few of the questions you may ask yourself. But you might be forgetting one important one. Have I given anyone my itinerary and contact information in case an emergency arises?

Matthew Smillie, a vacation rental expert, explains important safety tips below when traveling abroad.

I’m going abroad – what should I do?
“One of the first, and most important, things to remember is to fill out the emergency page on your passport,” says Smillie, whose business rents and maintains luxury beach villas in Aruba. “The emergency page of your passport will help should anything happen while you are traveling. It will explain to anyone who sees it who should be contacted in the event of an emergency, and can make an already confusing time much easier to navigate.”

The United States Department of State offers the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to U.S. citizens traveling abroad. STEP allows travelers to register their information so that you can be reached should an emergency arise at home during your travels, and also to assist you if there is a crisis while you are out of the country.

The STEP program registers you with U.S. embassies or consulates in the area to which you are traveling. U.S. consular officers will then be able to help you more efficiently should an emergency arise while you. The officers can help you should you run into a medical or other emergency while you are traveling.

“Before you begin your travel, you may not even consider the idea of an emergency arising,” says Smillie, whose Aruba rentals company prides itself on providing exceptional service to its customers. “But accidents can occur any time. Traveling abroad does bring dangers and issues you might not plan for.”

Have you thought about what would happen if you ran into serious financial or legal difficulties while outside the United States? American consular officers can provide names of local attorneys or doctors, and can even provide loans to destitute American citizens traveling abroad. If dangerous conditions arise while you are traveling, the officers can provide important information to assist you.

Consular officers can also assist travelers with nonemergency services. If you are planning travel during an election season and still wish to participate, the officers can help you with absentee voting. They can also help file tax forms, and even notarize documents and issue passports.

STEP is a free program, and is available for those traveling and living overseas. Registering your information is simple and only requires a visit to the State Department’s website. Registering for STEP can help protect you, but it also allows your family a means of locating you should an emergency arise at home while you are overseas. They can contact the Office of Overseas Citizens Services, who can then contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country you are in. If your information has been registered, the embassy will then be able to contact you at your hotel or the accommodation where you are staying.

Other tips to keep in mind when traveling abroad are:
• Always leave a copy of your itinerary. Be sure family or friends have been given a copy of your itinerary so they know your travel plans. It is also helpful to leave them with a copy of your passport data page and visa.
• Before leaving, check your overseas medical coverage. Contact your insurance company to see if your policy applies overseas, and if it covers emergencies. You might not be able to plan ahead of time for a medical emergency, such as medical evacuations, but you can be sure you’re covered if something should happen. If your current plan does not include international coverage, consider purchasing supplemental insurance to cover you.
• Familiarize yourself with not only the current condition of the country to which you are traveling, but also its laws. You are subject to the laws of the country to which you are traveling. Visiting the state department website before traveling can provide you with useful information about the country you plan to visit.
• Take safety precautions during travel. Avoid being the target of a crime by not carrying excessive amounts of money or wearing conspicuous clothing or jewelry. Do not leave your luggage unattended, or accept anything from strangers. Do not travel to areas that are considered dangerous.

Traveling abroad has much to offer – learning more about different cultures, experiencing sights and tastes that aren’t available at home, and so much more. With proper safety precautions and preplanning work, traveling, whether around the country or to the other side of the world, can be fun, meaningful and most important, safe.

Tips on How to Rent a Vacation Home and Why Use A Rental Company

December 10th, 2012

ARUBA – It’s doesn’t matter whether you want to stay in an apartment, condo or beachside villa, you can find a vacation rental Aruba that fits your budget and your travel timeframe if you know where to look.

“Vacation homes offer travelers a more intimate experience than a hotel,” said Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, which offers Aruba beach villas. “Generally speaking, using a property management company is easier, as travelers can ensure the home they book on the site is the home they stay in, plus the company can offer advice on things to do.”

Smillie has put together a simple how-to list regarding how to rent a vacation home:

• Deciding where you want to go on vacation is easy; choosing where within in the vacation town/island you want to stay is the hard part. If you have your heart set on a particular location but it is booked, try to make your travel dates flexible.

“We have some properties that book months in advance, so the more flexible you are with your travel dates, the better off you will be,” said Smillie, who offers villas in Aruba.

    • Try to book a rental during the low season. Plane rides and rental prices will be lower and you may even get more property for less money than if you travel during a popular holiday, said Smillie.

    • Compare prices and amenities, but be open to location. Make a list of must-haves such as beach access, private pool and laundry room. If you book based on location, you may sacrifice some of the amenities you want.

    • Once you decide on a rental and have secured it for your stay, keep in contact with the rental company. Make copies of contracts, ensure you know how and/or where to pick up the key, arrange for transportation from the airport and start researching excursions.

“The great thing about a property management company is that they can handle everything for you, from airport transportation to in-home massages, stocking your pantry and booking excursions,” said Smillie.

    • Before you depart for your vacation, confirm all travel arrangements with the rental company. Ensure if someone is meeting you to escort you to the rental, that they are still available to pick you up. If you need a car seat or a stroller, make sure that is arranged prior to arriving at your destination.

    • Once you arrive to your destination, don’t forget to relax.

“We have so many people come to the island who are rushing around trying to make everything perfect,” the vacation rentals services provider said. “Perfection is our job. When you use a rental company, we are on-call 24/7 to serve you. We can help you with anything you need, even if it’s just a recommendation on where to eat.”

Important Factors to Take Into Account When Honeymooning Abroad

October 18th, 2012

ARUBA — While most honeymooners choose an all-inclusive resort for their romantic getaway, there is an alternative that offers more privacy, more space and more amenities for a lower price.

Vacation rentals are available for short-term use and are located in some of the most beautiful places in the world.

“After spending so much on a wedding, the last thing a new couple wants to do is pay an arm and a leg for their vacation,” said Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, which specializes in beach rentals.

An Aruba vacation rental offered by a professional property management company can give newlyweds a comfortable, homelike environment for much less than a hotel. Most rentals are located on the beach or within walking distance to the beach. They come equipped with a full kitchen, private pools and/or hot tubs, spacious rooms and most importantly privacy.

A property management company can offer newlyweds Aruba accommodation services that include a fully stocked kitchen, recommendations and/or bookings for excursions, massages and restaurants.

Smillie has put together a list of factors to take into account when looking for a vacation rental:

  • Budget
Once you determine your honeymoon budget, stick to it, said Smillie. Plan for everything including travel expenses, meals, shopping, excursions and unforeseen expenses. Find a property that fits in your budget and meets your needs.

“If it’s just the two of you, staying in a home that sleeps five or more is not necessary,” said Smillie. “There are a lot of properties that have couples in mind, so aim for those, as they are generally more affordable, yet more spacious than a hotel room.”

  • Location
When booking your honeymoon location it is important that you pick a rental near destinations you want to visit, or if you want privacy, reserve a place that is away from the crowds and businesses. If you decide to stay away from the attractions, you may want to look into booking a rental car.
  • Select a date
Embarking on your honeymoon on a holiday or during a time when tourists are abundant can cause the prices of vacation rentals to inflate. Try and book your rental during an off-peak season, as some properties are more affordable throughout these times. Traveling out of season is also ideal for Aruba honeymooners, as the beaches and tourist attractions are less crowded.
  • Amenities
Unlike a hotel, vacation rentals give occupants options. You can cook your own meals, use a private pool or easily access the beach. Wi-Fi, cable and utilities are all included. To get a feel for the property you are interested in, most companies will provide you with a picture of the property, as well as past customer reviews.

The island of Aruba offers travelers a range of activities that can please anyone. From snorkeling tours and hiking adventures to horseback rides and museums, this island is full of fun.

How to Protect Your Security Deposit While Staying in a Vacation Home

September 6th, 2012

Aruba – A security deposit for a vacation home generally runs between $200 and $500. The reason this is such a hefty sum of money is because you are being entrusted to care for someone else’s financial asset.

“Sometimes it can be hard to let loose on vacation with so much money on the line,” said Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, a company that specializes in Aruba beach villas. “But if you take the proper precautions and treat the home with care, you should have no issues getting the money back.”

To help you maintain your peace of mind and thoroughly enjoy your vacation, the Aruba accommodation provider suggests the following:

  1. Fully understand your deposits and fees
The best way to avoid the surprise of paying more than you expected for your rental is to understand your rental’s deposit and fee guidelines. Some rentals include addendums that state non-refundable cleaning fees and/or pet fees. It is best to speak with the property manager before signing the contract.
  2. Inspect the property when you arrive
Before you settle in and unpack your bags, walk through the home. Take photos and make notes of any existing issues that the management company may have overlooked. Contact the management company via email or telephone and make them aware of any damage that you do not want to be held accountable for when it comes time for checkout.
  3. Protect the property
Vacation rentals are typically decorated by the homeowner and while most decorate with visitors in mind, you should take the time to put away anything you think might get damaged. This is especially important if you are traveling with children, said Smillie who provides villas in Aruba. Anything that can be hazardous to your child or that they could get hold of and damage should be stowed away in a safe place.
  4. Honor the rules in the contract
Violating a rule outlined in the contract is the best way to ensure you will not get your security deposit back. Don’t allow more than the allotted amount of guests and if the rules state no pets, be sure to leave them at home with a sitter.

“Whether or not the rule violation causes damage to the property makes no difference,” said the villas in Aruba professional. “If you think you won’t get caught, think again. The neighbors are typically permanent residents and most enjoy watching over the home while renters are present.”

  5. Admit to damage
Accidents happen, so if you do break something while at the property call the management company as soon as possible. Whether it was a small item that was damaged or a stain on the carpet, the faster you report it, the more likely you are to get your deposit back.
  6. Clean before leaving
Even if your contract states that a company will be brought in to clean the home after your departure, it’s always better to tidy up before you leave. Take the sheets off the bed, make a pile of used towels and take out the garbage. By doing these simple tasks, you may avoid excess cleaning fees.
  7. Travel insurance
Most people are not aware that some travel insurance policies include security deposit protection insurance or accidental rental damage insurance. By purchasing this additional coverage you will pay a small repair fee instead of being left with a large bill if something goes wrong.

“There are few instances where people do not get their deposit back on their vacatoin rentals in Aruba,” said Smillie. “And while we trust and screen our renters, accidents do happen. It’s how the renter handles the accident that will determine whether or not they get their deposit back.”

Why Investors Should Hire a Property Management Company

August 5th, 2012

ARUBA – While the allure of investing in a rental property may seem like a rewarding and positive venture, managing tenants and properties can be overwhelming. The best route may be to hire a professional property manager to ease the burden.

“Hiring a property manager is a great idea for people who don’t have the experience or the time to manage a rental property on their own,” said Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, a company that specializes in Aruba villa rentals.

Property management companies deal directly with prospects and tenants. A good property management company will bring their know-how and experience to your investment, and give you the peace of mind that comes with knowing your property is in good hands.

People who have a lot of properties, who do not live near their rental property, who are not interested in hands-on management, or have no time to devote to the property should consider hiring a management company.

The Aruba golf vacation professional has put together a list of reasons why investors should hire a property manager:

The price is right
As the property owner, you could spend time researching comparable rental prices on the Internet to see what other landlords are charging, or you could hand the task to the property manager. They have the time and know-how to conduct a complete analysis of the market and set the property at a price that will attract renters and give you a return on your investment.

“Property managers will find investors the perfect balance between increasing your monthly income and preserving low rents,” said the tropical villas specialist.

Occupied
A reputable property manager can help you find the perfect tenants. The manager will also handle all the tasks related to your property such as legal issues, contracts, credit reports, tenant screenings, security checks and verifying employment.

Rent collection
Whether it’s a seasonal rental or a monthly contract, collecting payments can be a bit of a challenge for most property owners. However, the property manager already has an effective system in place to collect rent in a timely manner.

Relationships
Aside from finding tenants for your property, a property manager will work to maintain a good relationship with them. This is great for seasonal properties, as good experiences can lead to more tenants in the future. From handling the maintenance and cleaning of the property to dealing with situations as they arise, a property manager is always on your team.

Protection against liability and lawsuits
Property managers are well aware of the changing market trends and any legislation that may affect landlords and investors. The property manager is well-versed and they can tap into their resources to develop a clear understanding of expectations.

Utility Usage
Property management companies document the electricity and water usage on a weekly basis. With efficient oversight, the company can save their clients so much on the usage, it pays for the property management fees.

“Anything can happen while a property is left unoccupied, from split water pipes to timers breaking and causing 24-hour usage,” said Smillie, Aruba vacation rentals pro. “We act as the owner while they are away, we treat the property as if it was our own and we make every effort to save them money by catching problems before they become costly.”

Monthly services
Property management companies handle all monthly services such as pest control, cleaning, and pool and lawn care maintenance. They are also the point of contact for utility and alarm companies.

“Hiring a property manager means ensuring your property is well taken care of and running efficiently around the clock,” said the beach rentals in Aruba provider.

Common Myths Associated with Renting a Vacation Home

July 10th, 2012

ARUBA — If you haven’t experienced what a vacation is like in a rental home, it’s probably because you have fallen victim to believing what you read. Booking a vacation home is the easiest, most affordable way to travel, but thanks to common misconceptions, travelers often are hesitant.

Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, urges travelers to do their own research and book a vacation property through a reputable company and experience a more comfortable way to vacation.

“There are a lot of myths about booking a vacation home, which is why a lot of people still opt for a hotel room vacation,” said Smillie, whose company offers travelers assistance with planning an Aruba golf vacation. “It’s high time we debunk the myths and show people what a rental can offer them.”

Here are the top 10 myths about renting a vacation home:

1. Vacation rentals are expensive
The per-person cost of a vacation rental is significantly lower than the cost of a hotel. Plus, for no extra cost, you will have privacy, extra space, and many of the luxuries you would find at home, like a full kitchen and a private pool.

2. Booking a vacation home is unreliable
With the Internet comes the occasional scammer. We all know this to be true. But when you book a property through a reliable property management company, you can rest assured the property you book is the property you get and they won’t give your reservation to someone else.

3. Hotels and resorts have more to offer
This couldn’t be farther from the truth. When you book a vacation home, you get more amenities at no extra cost. Imagine having a private pool, full kitchen, game room, laundry room and separate bathrooms and bedrooms for the same price as a hotel room. Not even a free continental breakfast can touch that, no matter how good it tastes.

4. Vacation rentals are not well-kept
Many vacation homes are owned by private individuals who pay a company to manage their property. When travelers are not occupying their home, the owners enjoy their beach rentals, which means they are invested in maintaining the home so they can enjoy it as much as their renters. Many property owners even pay for cleaning services before and after travelers visit to ensure it is in tip-top condition.

5. There is no one to call if something happens
Regardless of whether a vacation home is maintained by a company or the owner, there will always be someone available to assist you. They can help you with everything from a leaking toilet to recommendations for dinner.

6. Dining out is preferred
While it is convenient to order room service or eat out for every meal, it can get costly. Staying in a vacation home means you have the luxury of shopping at the local markets and preparing your own meals, or you can enjoy a few nights on the town without going over budget. With access to a full kitchen, you can choose to save money or splurge on local cuisine.

7. Vacation rentals are in rural areas
On the contrary, vacation rentals Aruba are available wherever you want to stay. From beachside homes that are within walking distance to local attractions to private villas away from it all, vacation rentals are in the heart of your vacation destination.

8. Limited options
Vacation homes are available for every taste and family size. Whether you are looking for a romantic condo for two or a large home with a private guesthouse, a vacation rental can accommodate you.

9. Concerns about safety
Many vacation homes are nestled in private, gated communities with 24/7 security. Forget the hassle of handing out hotel keys to members of your family and letting them go to the room on the top floor alone. When you stay in a vacation home, your family is always safe and within arms’ reach.

10. No concierge
Property management companies offer travelers the same level of assistance as a concierge at a hotel. Common Travel Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

June 25th, 2012

ARUBA – Nobody wants to spend more than they have to on vacation. But when planning a vacation with family, it’s even more important to keep the budget in check.

“It’s common for people traveling to make a few careless mistakes when embarking on the unknown,” said Matthew Smillie, owner of Aruba Villa Vacation Homes, which specializes in renting Aruba vacation villas. “Sometimes the mistakes we make on vacation are costly and could have been avoided with proper planning.”

From over packing to dining out at overpriced restaurants, here are common mistakes to avoid on your next trip.

Failing to buy travel insurance: You never know what is going to happen between the time your vacation begins and ends. You or a family member could get sick or injured and the only way to ensure your expenses are covered is by purchasing travel insurance through a reputable company.

“Murphy’s law never takes a holiday and most companies, whether an airline or a hotel, are not sympathetic to your plight,” said the Aruba golf vacation expert. “Insurance covers you for everything from missing your flight and losing your luggage to becoming ill or injured before or during your vacation.”

Traveling during school holidays: Tourists crowd many popular beach destinations in summer and winter. During school holidays, flights and lodging rates are off the charts.

“Off-season travelers get the best values without question,” said Aruba golf vacation pro, Smillie. “Take for instance the weather in Aruba in the fall and spring, it’s not too hot and not too rainy, it’s perfect. It is generally much more cost-effective than traveling in the summer or winter.”

Staying at a luxury resort: While staying at a luxurious resort has many perks, prices can range from $400 to $600 per night. Consider staying in a vacation rental. Full kitchen, ample square footage, access to washing machines and privacy from other travelers are all things you can expect from a rental.

“Travelers get the most bang for their buck when they book a villa rental,” said the Aruba Rentals expert, Smillie. “They provide all the luxuries of home and more perks than a hotel, at a price that can’t be beat.”

Overambitious itinerary: Don’t be afraid to change your plans due to weather or money shortage, said Smillie. Be flexible and don’t try to see everything. Pinpoint a few places you would like to see and then plan your days accordingly. Take it all in and don’t rush through the experience. The same attractions will be there tomorrow.

Over packing: Pack only what you need and know you’ll use; not what you think you’ll use. Never underestimate the chance your bag will be overweight. With checked bag fees on the rise, there are things you can buy at your destination to save money. Plus, if you stay in a vacation rental, you’re just one wash away from a new, clean outfit, said Smillie.

Throwing the budget sheet out the window: The budget you create should be an outline for how you would like to spend your money and where. Allow for some breathing room for unexpected expenses and don’t be overzealous when buying gifts for family members who are back home. Sometimes the best items are the inexpensive.

Sticking to the tourist trail: Go off the beaten path and create your own unique experiences. Speak to the locals about things to do and don’t spend all your money on expensive snorkeling tours when you could rent gear from a dive shop and have just as much fun snorkeling along the beach.

Eating out: Instead of taking your family out to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, try to eat in as much as you can. One of the perks of a vacation rental is being able to control when and where your family eats. While cooking on vacation isn’t a top priority for most travelers, dining out can be one of the most expensive elements on the budget sheet. If you do go out, compare restaurant prices before you head out the door.

Forgetting to relax: You’re on vacation after all and the last thing you need to do is worry. Forget the boat tour, zip line adventure and dive trip, save time to enjoy just being on vacation.

While it is inevitable that you may fall victim to any one of these mistakes, don’t get disappointed, said Smillie. Keep enjoying your experience and take it all in strides, it’ll make you grown and learn as a traveler and a person.
